The Time to Turn Around – is NOW!

Oh the road...

Oh the road…

I just finished reading a page out of my devotional of Joy and Laughter (by Mary Hollingsworth). Usually, I post my favorite bible verses of the day and such to my special “swords and shield” page (http://wp.me/P3VEV0-1u), but this one in particular, I thought, deserved a little extra special attention! The bible verse was Acts 3:19, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away.” The author went on to describe a farmer out in his little old pickup truck, taking a drive through town, getting lost, and u-turning around to get back on track: going down a one-way-road…the wrong way! Ah the imagery cracks me up!!

Today has been one of those days I just want to throw my hands up in the air and dwell in sorrow and self criticism over all of my faults: I took a quiz that did not go so well. I have neglected exercise these past couple days and haven’t been eating well. I am not involved enough with my groups and volunteering activities at school. I haven’t been reading the bible or my devotionals as much as I’d like…

I found myself totally stuck on these awful, negative thoughts; it was no wonder I could barely bring myself to hang up with James tonight during our evening FaceTime! I felt so low! With a short silent prayer, some tears, and a bit of romantic serenading and crackage of jokes by James on my behalf, I was finally able say a final adieu for the evening with a smile on my face. I reached for that good old devotional that Mrs. England gave me as a shower gift- Joy and Laughter …

It’s true that we can sometimes mess things up terribly. And to a degree it’s valuable to acknowledge that failure, but it’s equally important that we seize these as opportunities turn things around … change our ways, and finally we need to expect to get lost and turned around in this labyrinth of life all over again and again.

It’s time to change!!! Tonight I’ll go to bed thinkin’… the time to change is NOW, and tomorrow night, I’ll likely have to be ready to say that again. We must always be ready to turn … over… like an autumn leaf, if I may…

So here’s me on my soap box – don’t be like me tonight, dwelling on the wrongs and mistakes for very long, just think of those things as opportunities to turn a new leaf – and remember it will be time to turn a new leaf again before you know it-like how fall comes and goes in Ohio every year before we know it!!! Orrrrr try to be like the recoiling elastic fibers in our lungs-the little guys residing in the little lung air sacs, alveoli. After every exhalation, during which they get squeezed – squishing all the air out, they open the alveoli back up to receive new, fresh, oxygenated air! Over and over again with each breath we take. And so we must be…

Ok so I really just wanted to include my photo of the alveoli! But they also happen to be a great analogy!!! And back to that farmer, no matter how awkward or difficult it is to turn yourself around, remember to think simply and without hesitation, “wait a sec, I’m going the wrong way,” pull a u-y, and get back on the road!
